Crocodile Grabs 65-Pound Dog From Dock in Key Largo

This is one of the most incredible and sad things I've heard lately. A large dog named Roxie was grabbed right off the deck in the backyard of a Key Largo home. Roxie always hung around on the dog looking out over the water, but this time a crocodile jumped four feet from the water to grab the dog off the dock.

The owners were outside when they heard the splash. Imagine their horror when they went to check and saw their dog in the croc's mouth. They called for help, and Sherriff’s deputies showed up quickly to try to offer assistance. By then, of course, the poor dog was dead. However, they really wanted to retrieve the body so the family could bury it. This was especially important to them since the crocodile would likely have remained in the area feasting on the carcass for a few days, and that would have been too cruel for the family to endure.

They tried several times to get the crocodile to drop the dog. They splashed the water near the crocodile, but it kept swimming away. It even tried to go under the water, but it couldn't with the dog's body in its mouth. Finally, the crocodile let go of the dog, and they were able to retrieve it so the family could give it a proper burial.

Can you imagine how scary this must be for those living in that area? Neighbors and officers from the Wildlife Conservation Commission estimated that the crocodile must be at least 10 feet long. It is unlikely it will grab another small animal or, heaven forbid, a small child again in the future. However, I know I would be really uncomfortable hanging out near the water for a while if I lived near there.
