I'm so sad to hear about Gallagher's
health problems lately. Two weeks ago he had a heart attack, and now he has had
another one.
He is only 65 years old and this is
his third heart attack in less than a year. He had a heart attack during a
performance last year. He had recuperated and planned to go on tour again, but
then he had another heart attack two weeks ago. This one was so severe that
they put him in a medically induced coma while they treated him. He was
released only four days ago from the hospital, and now he has already had
another (milder) heart attack.
Gallagher has been on the road doing
his act for 32 years and he says he is tired of touring. It seems to be tiring
out his body, too. He is now planning to stop the constant touring and just do
a few shows once in a while. His manager hopes that he'll tone his act down a
bit too so that it will be less of a strain on him physically.
I remember seeing one of Gallagher's
live shows when he was in his prime. It was such a hilarious act. He has such a
quick wit, and I just love the quirky way his brain works. Of course, the
highlight of the performance for many was always the segment where he would
make a big mess on stage with all kinds of gags that often coated himself and
the first few rows of the audience in various kinds of foodstuffs. This all
culminated in Gallagher smashing a watermelon with a giant sledgehammer and raining
down watermelon all over the first few rows of the audience.
While that was entertaining, I
personally preferred his wordplay and witty remarks. I think if he pared his
show down to just that and left out all the physical stuff in order to spare his
health, he would still have plenty of fans that would love to see him perform.
I know I would enjoy seeing him again.
