Wow,
I'm really surprised at Steven Tyler, and pleasantly so. Up until now, it has
seemed to me that he has been pretty placid and easy going as a judge on
American Idol. But that all changed after contestant Heejun Han got a little
carried away on his Billy Joel performance. Apparently Tyler was not amused at
his antics and told him so in no uncertain terms on national television!
I
am not saying I agree with Steven Tyler's take on Heejun's performance. I have
always liked Heejun, and I enjoy his quirky sense of humor. However, I am
intrigued to see Tyler express a negative opinion in a straightforward manner for
a change. That is something I hadn't noticed from him before, and I'm glad to
know he will do it if he feels it is warranted.
I
like it when the American Idol judges present a comfortable mix of positive
encouragement and constructive criticism. I don't find it entertaining when
they're mean just to be mean, but if a judge feels like they need to set a
person straight, I'm glad they have the gumption to do so.
Even
though I’m glad Steven Tyler spoke his mind, I am happy that the fallout from
Tyler's disapproval didn't cost Heejun his place on the show. Another
contestant, Erika Van Pelt, went home this week instead. I really enjoy Heejun,
and I'm looking forward to seeing more of him in the future. I must say, though,
that I'm also looking forward to seeing more of this direct and blunt side of
Steven Tyler in the future too.
