When I heard reports and saw images
of the scary incident with the JetBlue pilot today, I found it equal parts
disturbing and sad. Obviously, the man is a skilled professional or he would
not still hold this position of serious responsibility. How awful, then, to see
his dignity stripped of him as he undergoes an apparently out-of-character
breakdown. I cannot imagine how his family and friends must be feeling right
now and how mortified he is going to be when he returns to his right state of
mind. It will be awful enough for him to realize what he did and how he actually
could have ended up injuring or killing himself, his coworkers and his
passengers. But then to see it all played out in the public media? How devastating.
I hope he has a fine group of people around him who can lend him support as he
gets well, because otherwise I don't know how one could recover from that type
of public humiliation.
Of course, my only concern is not for
the pilot. I am horrified to think what would have happened on that plane if
the co-pilot had not acted so skillfully to start a chain of events that
brought the pilot under control. I am just flabbergasted to see that this type
of incident could happen in the first place. I know there are systems in place
to make sure the airline personnel are in top form before they are allowed to
continue in their jobs. However, I cannot believe that they failed so miserably
in this instance. It will be interesting to learn what brought on this episode
and find out if today’s near tragedy was in any way preventable. If so, let’s
hope the airlines learn a valuable lesson from this sad affair.
