James Cameron just joined an elite
group of other rich and famous adventurers. He set out to dive to the bottom of
the deepest part of the ocean this weekend, and he made it! He becomes one of
only three people to travel to the bottom of the world. Cameron joined together
with Rolex and National Geographic to conduct deep-sea exploration and research.
The Marianas Trench is almost 36,000
feet down in the Pacific Ocean near the Mariana Islands. While two others have
succeeded in making the seven-mile trip before, they traveled together. That
was back in 1960, and no one had attempted it since then. Now Cameron has
become the first one to travel to the bottom of the Marianas Trench solo.
Although the trip down to the ocean
floor and back only required three or four hours, the adventure lasted a little
longer than that. This is because Cameron didn't just go down and come right
back up. While he was down there, he spent about three hours collecting samples
off the ocean floor. Naturally, he also spent some time filming his adventure.
Actually, he had planned to collect
many more samples over about six hours. However, a hydraulic leak forced him to
cut his trip short. He couldn't see out his window because the fluid coated it,
so he had to come back up. He says this just means he has to go back down and
get some more samples at another time. I don't doubt he will do it!
